Tuesday, May 1st was an extravagant day for Urbana High School after hours. At 4:49 pm a tornado was reported as touching down in a field 4 miles southwest of Savoy (According to AccuWeather.com).  This resulted in the county undergoing a tornado warning.  For students, teachers, and athletes who were still participating in activities at the High School this meant taking every precaution possible.

At the time the warning was issued there were students participating in an afterschool credit recapture program.  Athletes included in the mix were girls’ soccer players and softball players. Also included in the madness were a multitude of track and field athletes who were competing in the Twin City meet which Urbana happened to be hosting. Freshman Track and Field athlete Abram Washington said, “I thought that our meet was going to get cancelled, but it didn’t.”  With all these athletes stock piled into one hallway it became extremely hot and extremely smelly.  Senior girls soccer star Melinda Mendoza described the atmosphere as,” Humid, crowded, and musty. “

What could have been a large panic was quickly calmed down and brought together by Assistant Principals Travis Courson and Danielle Cook and Dean Angelica Franklin.  Ms. Franklin assumed the responsibility of organizing all students, staff and athletes into the safest areas in the school, as well as keeping them updated on the status of the tornado. It’s safe to say that the UHS community banded together in a time of necessity to overcome this event.

**Shout out to Urbana resident John Fisher for taking the photo!**
