On April 13, French gangster escaped from the Lille-Sequedin prison in northern France.

Faid, about to enter the visitor’s room to speak with his brother, produced a pistol and took four prison guards. He used explosives to destroy five gates and get to the prison parking lot, where an accomplice took him and one of the hostages to a second vehicle waiting on the A25 highway, where the first vehicle and final hostage were abandoned.

Faid was arrested in 1998 after three years on the run and sentenced to 20 years in jail. During his ten years in jail, he released a memoir entitled, “Robber: From Suburbs to Organized Crime.” He was released on parole in 2009, and subsequently became a media sensation before being arrested again in 2011 on charges of masterminding an attempted armed robbery and sentenced to eight years.

An arrest warrant for him has been issued in 26 European countries and he has been placed on INTERPOL’s most wanted list.

Faid reportedly drew inspiration from Hollywood films, particularly “Scarface” and the heist film, “Heat,” to which he paid tribute by wearing the same hockey masks as its’ protagonists during a raid on a security van. He is known for such audacious acts as robbing armored cars.

Faid has also drawn comparisons to French outlaw Jacques Mesrine, who had a similar reputation and the same attorney. Mesrine was killed in a shootout in Paris in 1979.
