$1 Million in jewelry stolen near Cannes Film Festival

Just hours following a screening of a film based off of break-ins at celebrity homes for the Cannes Film Festival, around $1 million in jewelry was stolen from the Novotel hotel room of a representative of the Swiss-based jewelry company, Chopard.

Chopard, also the sponsor of the festival, was hosting a high-end gala at a different hotel during the robbery. Police are not sure who the jewelry was for, nor what it was, but can assume it had some connection to the festival. They can also assume the job was done by more than one person.

Cmdr. Bernard Mascarelli, a judicial police spokesman for the city of Nice believes that Chopard “was targeted because it wasn’t someone who had been seeking attention…There must have been either an inside complicity, or people who were in contact with this person and knew that the person has jewels.”

Chopard has yet to speak about the robbery, but will do so later tonight.
