Since the early 1960’s, human cloning has been a much talked about topic among the scientists, and average people of the world. The identical copying of genes belonging to a person to customize another person has become a highly controversial topic.
Usually when you hear the term human cloning we get a Sci-Fi idea of humans who are cloned being “non-human”. According tohumancloning.org, today human cloning has become a much-practiced procedure. Many of these procedures are used to prevent birth defects such as Down syndrome, treat Leukemia and cancer, cosmetic surgeries. This is far from the idea of human cloning resulting in a “sub-human.”
In the States and also around the world many people from babies to adults suffer from diseases such as cystic fibrosis, liver and kidney fail, and spinal cord injuries. Human cloning provides scientific testing through animals to help aid injuries like cystic fibrosis or spinal cord injuries.
Most of the testing occurs using animals and this has also become controversial among animal rights activists. On July 5, 1996 a group of Scottish scientists successfully cloned a sheep now known as “Dolly” (science.howstuffworks.com/life/genetic/human-cloning.htm). The cloning of this animal marked a “breakthrough in science,” and also led to the beginning of human cloning.
Sophomore Miguel Lucio thinks that human cloning “benefits those who need it.” When someone is in need physically it would be nice to help him or her because you’d be affecting him or her for the rest of his or her lives. Many of people who see human cloning as an option for their personal healing (or someone else), share the similar opinions as Miguel.
Human Cloning may be a controversial topic but the facts show that it saves and improves lives. The idea to help someone suffering from defects such as Down-Syndrome, or cystic fibrosis, and many other diseases and defects will make life easier and much more enjoyable.
