Harry Potter Characters Destined for Divorce

It is with a heavy heart that I bear this tragic, heartbreaking news. Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley are destined for nothing but divorce papers. According to “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling, Ron would not, in the end, fulfill Hermione’s needs and succeed in making her happy. For all of us, as avid readers, watchers, and fans of the series, I’m sure that this release of news is less than enjoyable to digest. And, to top all of this off, Rowling believes that Hermione and hero Harry would make more of an ideal couple than Weasley.

“I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment,” Rowling said in an upcoming interview with Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) in “Wonderland” magazine. “That’s how it was conceived, really. For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron.”

Despite the sadness that this news does bring us, as Hermione and Ron were, in the seventh book, a sort of glimmer of hope in the midst of a world of turmoil, the hero and heroine finally realizing their true love is somewhat pleasing. Throughout the books Harry and Hermione showed signs of a budding romance -intimate conversations, reassuring advice, close meetings in tents, it all would have added up.

Well, if not for Ginny Weasely. According to popular believe, and my own, she was simply a plot devise of Rowling’s, put into place to add a bit of romance to the otherwise action, adventure intense story lines. Following Harry’s heroic rescue of Ginny from the grasps of Tom Riddle and the basilisk in “The Chamber of Secrets”, her swooning over him was justified. But truly, she was not insanely important to the plot, but one cannot argue that the terrific trio of Harry, Ron, and Hermione were crucial.

So yes, Ron and Hermione were not always the expected match – they were sometimes quite obnoxious about their dislike of each other – after they were caught “snogging” behind the curtains in the final book, all seemed to fall into place; in fact it seemed meant to be. Especially in the epilogue, when the two couples had children of their own. But maybe, just maybe, J.K Rowling has a point; Harry and Hermione are both exceedingly clever, and Ron is not exactly top of his class. Harry and Hermione are the hero and heroin, and Ron is constantly in the shadow of “the chosen one”. And really, do you think the author of arguably the most loved books of our generation would make this statement simply to make it? Maybe Harry Potter and Hermione Granger were destined to be together after all.
