Beauty and The Beast: A Reflection on the Recent UHS Drama Production

Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” was the spring musical at UHS this year, running from March 12-16. During that time, the students put on a total of eight performances. All the components of a musical shaped up just in time – the lighting, the intricate set, the colossal costumes, the well-known music, and the performers themselves.
The beloved tale – which follows Belle, a girl with dreams of adventure, as she finds herself imprisoned in an enchanted castle with a beast who is more than what he seems – drew in a variety of interests.

Being in the show myself, I am in awe of how every piece was able to come together in such a short time and people were able to relish the experience.
However, for the seniors, this show meant even more. As they say goodbye to their time at UHS, drama is an activity to which they have devoted much of their high school career.
Senior Makayla Perkins, who played the Enchanted Wardrobe, said, “It’s been a great experience being in the theater program here at Urbana, and I’m glad it ended with such a popular show. The last day was definitely emotional.”

“’Beauty and the Beast’ has been the perfect musical to end my high school experience on. It’s been challenging and so fun at the same time. Definitely one of the more professional shows we’ve done, right along with ‘Chicago,’ and I’m so glad to be a part of it,” said Senior Hannah King.

Tafadzwa Diener, who played Mrs. Potts, said, “The memories and friendships I’ve made doing theater at UHS are ones I could never replace or forget. I am so thankful that I had the chance to be a part of this family. I will miss everything about it and everyone who was there along with me on this wonderful journey.”
“I can’t imagine my high school experience without participating in drama. I’ve grown into a very strong actor, singer and dancer throughout the last four years. I wouldn’t change any of it. I’m so proud of the legacy that I left behind. Bittersweet memories – bittersweet,” said Senior Taz Wilson.

Jeremiah Beasley, who portrayed the Beast, said, “This has been the highlight of my high school experience, and I wouldn’t choose a better cast to end this year with. I will truly miss my UHS Drama family.”

As the more than two-month-long rehearsal process winded down and the performances whizzed by, the cast and crew were overwhelmed with emotion. This production is one that we are all sure to treasure always.
