The common core standards are the expectations held for students to complete each year in Language Arts and Mathematics. Common core standards were created so students will be prepared for a career, college, and life.
State leaders launched Common Core State Standards in schools and the standards have been around since 2009 according to corestandard.org.

People have expressed negative opinions toward the Common Core Standards since they were created. The way schools educational programs run in the U.S have always been a controversial topic.
Our students and how they’re educated determine the future. The more knowledge we appropriately give to our students the more likely they are to succeed. Programs like “No Kid Left Behind,” and “Race to the Top,” were both represented by presidents of the U.S to help better educate the youth. Such programs have gotten backlash from people who believe they do just the opposite.

It’s no secret that people think America is behind on education. Jokes are widely used to describe how far the U.S is behind when it comes to other countries.

“The problem is that there is something wrong with forcing schools to standardize education. Standards force schools to conform in exactly the kind of field where we should encourage diversity”, according to John Stossel, foxnews.com.
It’s been said that schools are becoming less diverse in what’s being taught to students.

Richard Geiger, UHS teacher, “In general I think common core is a good idea. I haven’t had the curriculum long enough to figure out what the problems are. It’s better than what we had before because stuff before was mainly based on content now new standards also focus one the process of learning. Standardized tests make teachers accountable the draw back on that is it takes away from the class.”

Two-thirds of college professors’ report that what is taught in high school does not prepare students for college according to Alliance for Excellent Education.
Nearly three out of four eighth and 12th-grade students cannot write proficiently, according to NAEP, 2012.
”The U.S. is the 6th worst in terms of high school graduation, with 23% failing to attain a diploma “, according to techcrunch.com.

The problem in schools is shown through the numbers. When U.S education is compared to other countries like South Korea the gap between is clear, the U.S. is behind.

“No other nation tests every student every year as we do. Our students are the most over-tested in the world. No other nation—at least no high-performing nation—judges the quality of teachers by the test scores of their students,” according to Diane Raviatch an education historian.

Common core standards in schools are controversial among the public. The point of schools is to educate in a way students can fully comprehend. It’s a big problem if schools are not educating their students properly.

The main problem with schools in the U.S is how we are educating our students. The statistics show that what our schools are doing isn’t working, and education is a priority- so fixing the problem is important.
