The Tragic Life of Lolita the Killer Whale: A Question of Captivity

0

Imagine being captured and locked into a room for 44 years without being able to interact with anyone, that is how Lolita the famous killer whale in the Miami Seaquarium feels. Orca Hunter Ted Griffin captured the majestic whale off the coast of Washington state in the 1970’s. Lolita is the lone survivor and is the main attraction at the Seaquarium.

With the dedication of a loving group of animal activists, U.S officials have recognized Lolita as an endangered species and there is a potential of her being released back where it belongs, the deep blue sea. They, the Animal Activists, argue she should have the same treatment and protection like other endangered killer whales. The location of Lolita’s family is known and officials say they can give Lolita back to the family.

A decision has yet to be made whether or not she should be released into the wild or kept in captivity. Robert Rose, the Miami Seaquarium curator claims that Lolita is well taken care of and happy. It is hard to believe because she lives in a tank that is slightly larger than an average pool.

The million dollar juicy question is whether or not Lolita can survive in the wild because it has been in captivity for such a long period of time and the risk of dying prematurely is highly likely.

Urbana High School Assistant Principal Mr. Gourley said “I would leave it to the experts. “

Urbana High School Junior Anthony Tuel said, ” Without a doubt Lolita should be freed and the Miami Seaquarium should be closed.”

In my humble opinion I think Lolita should be freed and be able to roam the place it once called home. Whales stick together like America and freedom.
