2015’s “Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports”

On May 2, 2015, 20 thoroughbred horses had the once in a lifetime chance to win the most prestigious race there is: the 141st Kentucky Derby at the Churchill Downs Racetrack in Louisville, KY, and the first leg of the Triple Crown.

Esteemed trainer Bob Baffert was the man behind two horses in this year’s race. Dortmund, the undefeated sire of 2008 Derby winner Big Brown, and American Pharoah, the favorite this year.

Victor Espinoza, the jockey aboard American Pharaoh, was last year’s winner, making 2014 his second Kentucky Derby win. 2015 made it his third.

Throughout the race, Dortmund, American Pharoah and Firing Line were neck and neck, until the last sixteenth of a mile. Firing Line, then in first, lost steam as American Pharoah gained it. His final time was 2:03.02.

“There’s a lot of positive energy on this horse,” Baffert said, as reported by The New York Times. “There’s a certain aura about him. He’s caught people’s attention.”

American Pharoah will race in the Preakness Stakes on May 16. The question being asked is if he is able to break the 37-year-old Triple Crown drought. With a jockey who won the first two legs of the Crown before losing in the Belmont Stakes last year, American Pharoah’s odds aren’t too bad.
