On December 6, at the Urbana Boys Basketball game versus Centennial, there was again no student section to be found. However, there was a wrinkle this time, as there was a section allotted for the students, but the students decided to sit in another location.

Athletic Director Steve Waller tells The Echo that he reserved a student section spot next to the pep band. When only 8-10 students sat in the spot, with an estimated 75 students gathering in a section below the main scoreboard, the student section area was repurposed for general seating. In the future, Waller states that students will not have a reserved spot until there is a “dedicated student section” in which students stand up, cheer, and get rowdy for their team.

The effort to create a student section is starting to become a larger topic of discussion as most opposing teams in the Big 12 conference have a student section, which reaps of benefits.  Not only does it encourage more students to attend the games, it gives them a chance to show off their school spirit and provide the team with a great advantage of noise and intimidation via distraction tactics.

Nothing is better than cheering on your team to victory, so let’s get Paw Pack revitalized and as always, Go Tigers!
