Urbana High School's Theater Door

Urbana High School’s Drama Program has a new production coming out, and it’s not a musical; it is Blithe Spirit.

Blithe Spirit is directed by Sara Jones and senior Saskia Bakker and stars Avery Wright as Charles Condomine, Sarah Steltzer as Ruth Condomine, Elise Johnson as Elvira Condomine, George Schaad as Eton, Alex Poulosky as Dr. Bradman, Liberty Gibb as Violet Bradman, and Theo Johnson as Baron Arcati. With a crew of 31 Techies, everyone is busy getting ready for opening night on February 14th at 7:00 p.m.

Blithe Spirit is a play about novelist Charles Condomine. Condomine calls Madame Arcati, a medium, to get help on his new book, but Arcati accidentally summons Elvira, Condomine’s dead wife. What could possibly go wrong?

Cast members are getting ready for the show and some of them are starting to reflect on this journey so far.

Elise Johnson, freshman, states, “I think we worked really hard on it, and I’m excited [for everyone] and I know that it’s going to be really really great, and it’s going to be funny”.

Everyone from actors to the techies have an important role.

Mika Peacha, freshman in costumes, states, “I joined tech for Blithe Spirit not only because I wanted to try something new for theatre, but also because I wanted to let my creativity be helpful for something that’s important to me.”

The theater company has a special opportunity each production where a student can be the director. The student director for Blithe Spirit is Saskia Bakker, senior. “It’s a great cast and we’ve all been working really hard! I’m personally enjoying learning the ropes when it comes to student directing and stage managing. Everyone should definitely come see it!” states Bakker.

Sara Jones, Director of Blithe Spirit, states, “When Mr. Broeker asked me what play I wanted to do, we had some understandings about the number of actors. It’s always difficult in high school theater because there are always a lot more girls who want parts than boys.”

What makes theater what it is can be described in many different ways. “I think the most important part of theatre is expressing yourself!” declares Johnson.

Whether you are a theater fan or not, Blithe Spirit has the perfect mix with comedy and mystery. The show is coming up fast, so make sure you’re ready to go.

Tickets cost $5 for students with an ID and $10 for adults.

  1. Great article. I can’t wait to be able to see the performance. The Urbana theatre has always done a great job!

  2. Thanks Jen! Means a lot. I won’t be able to go to the performance because it has a Ouija board in it and it focuses on a seance and I believe that both summons demons. Thanks for the awesome comment on Urbana Theater! We try to work our best!
