There have been a lot of great accomplishments by various UHS sports teams and I have picked a few sports and did a little profile on the team. Understand that I could not have picked every sport, so I had to pick and choose. I still love all the other sports teams!!

Boys Football – The tigers’ football team had a change in direction when Nathan Watson took over has head coach for the tigers. Watson use to be the Assistant Coach and Defensive Coach at Central High School. “When I saw the facilities, and met with Dr. Taylor and the rest of the administration and met the athletes and coaches I knew this was the place for me,” said Watson. Even though the team did not win any games this year there are high hopes for the 2010 season. “Our goals are to win the home opener and be twin city’s champs if we can do that, then win a play off game for the first time in school history,” Watson said.

Girls Tennis – The girl’s tennis team did great this year with wining the sectional title. This was a great accomplishment considering all the new girls on the team. Melissa Welch who has been coaching at Urbana for fourteen years coaches the ladies. “I enjoy coaching and getting to know students not just on the academic level and I love tennis,” said Coach Welch. Even though they won their sectional only one player made it to state senior Katarina Marjanovic. “It was great,” Welch said about winning sectionals.

Girls Cross-Country – The lady tigers won their regional meet and then advanced on to sectionals. The girls tied for fifth place with Centennial and were able to advance to the state meet and placed 12th in state. It was the first time since 1982 that the girl’s team had made it to the state meet. “It was an incredible experience I am so proud of the girls. They worked long and hard and there aren’t any more deserving athletes then them,” said Coach Renee Hunt, who has been coaching at Urbana for five years.

Boys Basketball – There was another change in boys sports this year as Coach Vashoune Russell took over as head coach for the varsity team. “I have known him my and have already developed a winning relationship. He is a great Coach,” said Senior Taylor Seten.
“I have been coaching here for the past six years (not as head coach), my heart bleeds orange and black,” Russell said. The team’s goals for next year are similar to that of football win Conference and Regionals.

Boy’s Baseball- The boys’ baseball team has had a great season there current record is 17-13 and 4-8 in the Big 12. It has been a very fun year and we have won a lot of games and we plan on winning regionals,” said Senior Cody Comstock. The team is ranked number one in their regional and their next game in Wednesday (5-26) playing the winner of the Danville- Central game. They are coached by Steve Waller who in his 10th year of coaching at UHS. “I enjoy teaching kids to play the game and watching them grow as athletes and young men,” Waller said.

Girl’s Track- With State last week the lady tigers sure have accomplished a lot. The team has taken ten events to the state meet, which includes nine girls. The team has had quite a season placing fourth at Big 12 and 3rd in Sectionals. The team was very successful coming home with 5 state medals, 7th 100m: Alyssa Wood, 8th Pole Vault : Shelby Stevenson, 100 and 300m Hurdles Mackenzie White 8th in 4×400 Wood, White, Stevenson and Nicole Choquette

This is a game that requires extreme physical exertion, a fun game and a good workout and one of the fastest growing traditional sports in the country. This is: tennis. The UHS boys tennis team had just started their season, and they’re starting if off with lots of hard work, good team participation and a higher “tennis IQ”. Although the season is still far from ending, the team is hoping to win as many dual meets as possible and win their conference.

“I want for every one of my players to feel like they matured as players on the court and as young men off of the court,” says UHS tennis boys head coach, Nathaniel Chattic.

For Sophomore tennis player Top Nasueb starting off the season was a little bit challenging. “It is difficult to tell how we are doing so far because we have not played many games yet,” says Nasueb. “If I were to say, we are doing okay, I guess.”

This season is not quite like the last one, the team is taking a different approach mentally and physically to this season.

“This season is different from last year because we have a new coach, and the seniors from last year left, however, we have new players also,” says Nasueb.

“One of the more common challenges is losing some players that helped to contribute to the team’s success last season,” says Coach Chattic. “How we can improve when losing some players is to encourage the guys that you have to step up to the plate and produce.”

“I think the team have to improve on getting mentally tough and improve on the team work,” says Nasueb.

Although there are some challenges that the team is facing this season, this is not stopping them from getting their goal, which is, to end with a winning season and win their sectional.

“I hope that these young men will, at the very least, take something away from this season that will encourage them to continue on in the sport of tennis over the summer and fall,” says Coach Chattic.

When it comes to developing the guys’ tennis skills, one of Coach Chattic’s goals is for the guys to improve upon their skills at whatever level they are at. “If this season is the first time he has picked up a racket, I will my best to make sure that he gets as many of the basics down as possible. For those that are more experienced in playing tennis, I want them to have a higher tennis IQ.”

Chattic advises his tennis players to stay humble and hungry – practice how they want to play in a real match. He wants them to study the game, and to always come with the expectation and willingness to work hard and grow as a person first, player second.

As a tennis coach, it’s hard to handle a number of players, however, Chattic enjoys working with the group of guys he has on the team. “To see how I can help to further shape and develop these young men with their talents on the court for the better will always be a one of the best things about coaching for me.”

Nasueb said he likes a lot of things about tennis. “What I like about tennis is being on the court and getting to do my ‘thing’,” he says. “The best thing of being in the tennis team is getting to take part in playing the sport.”

Chattic says that the most encouraging aspect when it comes to coaching the tennis team in UHS is knowing that he has some very capable players on this team this season that have blossomed from last year, and continue to get better.

“I love the diversity of personalities I have to work with on this team. Everyone brings his unique ‘flavor’ to our team, and so far it’s made for good team chemistry and fun practices,” says Chattic.

He wants to end this season with a bang. “I hope that they would continue to grow and develop as players and through their hard work, it would inspire others to come and try out for tennis next season!”

The Urbana High School Girls varsity soccer team has started off with a perfect record 3-0. They lost five starting seniors last year, including goalie Aubrey Morse, but that has not stopped them from being successful. After winning the regional title last year the team is hoping to do the same this year.

The team’s first game was against Mattoon on March 30 where the Tigers won 1-0 with Senior Gretchen Booth scoring the goal. “I think for our first game we played really well, ” said Junior Moriah Ward.

Thursday the Lady Tigers had another home game, this time against Monticello. Sophomore Melinda Mendoza and Senior Kelsey Choquette scored for another victory 2-0. “Most girls were gone over spring break so we had only a few days of practice before our games so it was great to win,” said Mendoza.

While braving Saturday’s rain storm the Tigers brought home another victory beating Danville. Kelsey Choquette scored again from an assist from Junior McKenzie Kirby to give the Tigers their third straight win 1-0. “The more we play in games the better we will get, the team is playing hard and strong and we can be competitive with any team,” said Head Coach Craig Huff.

Sadly the girls winning streak ended after they tied 1-1 with Uni on April 6. “Uni had a fast offense, so our defense worked hard to hold them and keep the ball on their half as much as we could,” said Sophomore Goalie Christie Stark.

The girl’s next game is Thursday April 8 at the home soccer field against Central at 4:15 p.m. Come out and support the Lady Tiger’s soccer team.

Running is a great way to get exercise and it can be quite easy to do: all you need is a good pair of running shoes and then you can steep outdoors and run. If you are looking to become a runner, here are a few wonderful tips you might want to look at before starting. “When you first start, don’t except to go out and run seven miles the first day without stopping,” said Senior Marissa Marrone who runs track and cross country for Urbana High School. “You have to build up your mileage, stay positive, and don’t walk!”

Step One: Find motivation

There’s no point in running if you don’t have any motivation, motivation is what will drive you to want to do your workout. Whether your motivation be trying to lose a few pounds for prom or it be just a new challenge your willing to take on, make sure there is a reason you want to run.

Step two: Get a good pair of running shoes.

It’s important to have a good pair of running shoes that do not hurt your feet. I personally think it best to get running shoes rather than cross-training, walking or other athletic shoes. Body & Sole (located in Savoy by what use to be Pages for all Ages) has a great variety of running shoes. While you are at the store, consultants will have you run on a treadmill that assess your feet, and then the sales associate will find a pair of shoes that are the best fit for your feet.

Step Three: Find a workout that works for you

There are many websites and books out there that have different workouts you can do…feel free to browse these different options. For a start, I recommend running five minutes the first day, seven minutes the second day, and nine the third day. For the first two to three weeks, run only three times a week. Each day that you run, add one to three more minutes until you get to 30 minutes (this is about three miles). On the third or fourth week, run four days a week; from here on, you can keep running 30 minutes a day for four days a week, or change it to five days a week or 40 minutes.

Step Four: Stay positive.

As Marrone already said, staying positive is very important as you get used to the running…After awhile, you might start to drift from your workout schedule. Remember, the thing that motivates you and why you wanted to run in the first place, and if that spark is not there anymore, maybe you should pick a new activity to do.

Step Five: Enter races

After running for a few months, enter a 5-k, which is a 3.1mile race. 5-k’s are held all the time, and can cost anywhere from $15- $50 to enter. After working so hard for a few months, 3.1 miles won’t seem that hard and races are great fun.

The Urbana Varsity baseball team played Moline Senior High School (Maroons) on Friday, hoping to go to 7-1 on the season. The Tigers started out 5-0, beating the likes of St. Thomas More, Georgetown-Ridgefarm, Oakwood, and a two-win sweep of Kankakee, before losing to Lake Forest. They then went on to beat Lanphier to make their record 6-1, where they were before the game on Friday.

“I would say timely hitting, our pitching doing well, and our defense playing well without making errors,” Assistant Coach Nick Stillwell said on the key to the team’s play to start the season.

The Tigers lost to Moline 9-2. Ben Thompson, Trey Russell, Laquan Grein, Nick Hoffman, Bryan Fink and Dylan Anderson each had one hit. It was 2-0 Moline, when the Maroons scored 4 runs in the sixth inning. The Tigers cut the lead to 6-2 after the sixth inning due to an RBI (Run Batted In) single by Laquan Grein, who also stole home during the same inning to get the Tigers their second run. Moline, though, got those two runs back, and one more in the top of the seventh inning to win 9-2.

“The pitcher was throwing a lot of strikes, and threw a bunch of pitches for strikes, so they had to fight a lot of pitches off,” Stillwell said on the offense not doing so well that afternoon.

“We just saw a lot of good pitches, and he’s their ace, and he threw pretty hard, and he’s one of the [great] pitchers we’ll see this season,” Second Baseman Trey Russell also said on the offense struggling.

The Tiger’s next games are vs. Rantoul and Westville on Saturday (which were canceled) and Charleston on Thursday, and Mahomet-Seymour on Friday, April 8 and 9, respectively.

The last third of the year is coming, and you know what that means…spring! Along with spring comes new sports, like boys tennis, girls soccer, boys baseball, girls softball, and boys and girls track. Here is a preview of every sport and what to look forward to this spring in Urbana sports.

Boys’ Tennis

Coach Nathaniel Chattic and the Urbana boys’ tennis team are coming off a year where they had talent, but couldn’t turn it into consistency.

“I felt we had the talent, but bringing that talent out on the courts on a consistent basis to our meets was a different thing altogether,” Chattic said. “As a result of our inconsistency, we fell short in several matches that I think we should have had greater successes in.”

He also talked about how the team can contend for a Big Twelve title this year, and what he expects overall of his team this year.

“We need to maintain a solid work ethic throughout our practices with the expectation that what we are capable of doing in practice we will produce in our match play,” said Chattic. “I am looking for those that have been through our practices and know the rigors of practice and match play to set an example of leadership for those that are ‘newer’ to the team. I expect these young men to blossom with their talents and their attitudes on the court, and also excel as ambassadors for their homes and their school off the court.”
The team’s biggest competition will come from the Danville, Normal, and the Champaign schools.

Girl’s Soccer

The girls’ soccer team has had a lot of success in the last decade or so, and after coming off a regional title from last year it is looking to add some more titles this year under head Coach Huff.

“We had a good team last year and we’re looking forward to this year,” Huff said. “We like the enthusiasm, and we are looking to build team spirit and fundamentals too.”

Coach Huff also talked about threats to compete this year and how to win the Big 12.

“I’m not really sure how the other teams line up, but under the right circumstances, we should line up well against them. I know the Champaign schools are good this year.”

So what’s the key to win the Big Twelve this year?

“Practice the fundamentals, play injury free, and winning the Big Twelve is never easy, but we like to set our sights on the future,” Huff said. “We’re just gonna have to be consistent and approach every game with enthusiasm and heart, and do all the little things right.” The Tiger’s biggest competition this year will be the Bloomington-Normal and Champaign schools.

Boys’ Track

Coach Beyers is the new Boy’s Track coach this season, as he tries to keep the track team competitive.

Before we talk though, let’s see how you compete in track, and what has happened in the past with the program.

“There are no playoffs in track and field and their really isn’t a team record in the sport,’ said Beyers. “However, the team sent one state qualifier to participate in the State Track Meet as Coach Jones (former UHS coach) has done for a number of consecutive years.”

There are still expectations this year, Beyers says.

“The team has a great deal of high hopes and expectations for the 2010 season. Right now we lack the depth to win a Big Twelve title, but we remain focused on ‘bigger’ things in individual successes at the state level of competition. We are beginning a new era and change can be difficult, though the guys are adapting as well as can be expected.”

Girls’ Track

Coach Boscolo has also had some success with her girls’ track team last season.

“We had a lot of success last year both as a team and individually. We finished fifth out of ten at outdoor Big Twelve and fourth out of thirteen at Sectionals,” Boscolo said. “When we went to state, our 4X2 team (Camille Parsons, Hannah Morris, Alyssa Wood, Lateshia Dove) finished ninth. Shelby Stevenson finished ninth in the Poll Vault and McKenzie White ninth in the 300 M Hurdles and twelfth in the 100 M Hurdles. Finally Alyssa Wood finished eighteenth in the 100 M Dash. McKenzie White broke the school record in the 100 and 300 M Hurdles, Shelby Stevenson in the Pole Vault, and in the 4 X 2 relay team.” (listed above).

There is some improvement to be made of course.

“We had very few distance runners last season and that part of our team has grown this season,” Boscolo said. “We are looking forward to having some depth and strength in the distance crew this year. We need to stay healthy and run, jump, and throw the best we can. It comes down to who runs faster, who jumps longer or higher, and throws farther. I expect to be in the top four in the conference this season.”

The Tiger’s biggest meet will be on March 20th at the U of I Armory. “This is a 64 team invite that is Co-Ed (both boys and girls). It is a wonderful competition with only one athlete per event per school per gender.” She said.

Boys Baseball

Coach Steve Waller’s baseball team underachieved last year, but are coming this year with a strong cast of Seniors four of which lettered (an honor given to an outstanding player) since their Sophomore year, and 1 lettering since his Freshman year.
“The rest of the team will provide a steady base of support throughout our tough schedule.’ Waller said.

Waller also explained what they needed to do to have success this season.

“In order to reach our goals, we will need to develop a strong bond of team chemistry. In addition, strong pitching efforts, coupled by a solid defense and timely hitting will prove beneficial for our success this season.” Waller said.

He also said they will be traveling to a lot of interesting places, among them were competing in an 8-team tournament at O’ Fallon High School where they will face teams from Illinois and Missouri (they will face Normal West to start off the tournament). They will also play Bloomington High School at O’Brien Field in Peoria (where the Peoria Chiefs, a Minor League Baseball team plays).

So what about the rest of the schedule?

“The whole Big 12 conference will be a tough test for us as well as many non-conference opponents.”

The Olympics are fun to watch, there are so many great sports. As I have watched the Olympics for the past sixteen days I have gathered the the top five American moments. I hope you enjoy my top five moments as much as I did watching them.

1) Men’s Hockey USA vs. Canada-The United States beat Canada 5-3 in the quarterfinal game. It was truly an amazing game, it was the first time in over 50
years that the USA men’s hockey team had beat Canada. “It feels great to win in an atmosphere like this and to be able to now set the bar high for us going
into the quarterfinals,” said U.S.A defenseman Brian Rafalski told USA Today. It was great to see the USA men’s team beat Canada in their own sport, at
home. The US team made it to the gold medal finals but failed to beat Canada and earned the silver medal.

2) Figure Skater Joannie Rochette – A short four days after her mother Therese passed away from a massive heart attack Rochette won a bronze medal.
Rochette mother died a few hours after arriving in Vancouver to watch her daughter skate in the Olympics. After the passing of her mom she decided to keep competing in the Olympics. “She’s going to get through this,” Canadian teammate Cynthia Phaneuf said. “She is just so strong. By being here and being able to compete after that happened, I’m just very impressed. I think she’s doing the right thing.” Phaneuf told the Huffington Post. Rochette performed extremely well under the conditions. Her performance left many people teary eyed, including commentator Scott Hamilton. “I don’t know how I could skate, my legs were shaking. I don’t know how I did it, my mind was not here. But I am glad I did and 10 years from now when the pain has gone a bit I would wish I skated here and I know that’s what my mom would want me to do,” Joannie Rochette told yahoo sports

3) The US’s Alpine Skiing Team – The US alpine ski team has dominated the world. Lindsey Vonn. Julia Mancuso. Bode Miller. These skiers are just three of the Americans
who have helped the US earn eight medals in Alpine Skiing. Vonn won gold in Downhill and a bronze in the Super G. Mancuso also won two medals, silver
in both the Super Combined and Downhill. Miller won a bronze in the Downhill, silver in the Super G and gold in the Super Combined. There performances
were not all good, Miller got disqualified in the Slalom and Vonn in super combined. “I really couldn’t be much happier,” Miller said after failing to finish in the Slalom event. “To have three medals, and the two medals I didn’t get, I skied hard. I came out, I was ready, I was prepared.” He told Yahoo Sports.

4) Men’s four man bobsled- The US’ mens bobsled team after 62 years with out winning a single medal not only made it onto the podium, but won the gold.
Steve Holcomb piloted the USA-1’s “Night Train” to a victory beating Canada (bronze) and defending gold medalist Germany (silver). It was Holcomb’s first
gold medal. “When they raise the flag and play ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ for your son,” said Steve Holcomb, the bobsledder’s father, his voice choking at
the thought, “well, that’s pretty cool.” He told NBC sports.

5) Men’s and Women’s Speedskating – The US speedskating team had two area athletes, Jonathan Kuck (long track silver medalist in team
pursuit) and Katherine Reutter ( short track bronze medalist in 3000m relay and silver medalist in 1000m). The US team did really well combing short track
and long track speed skating with the US winning 10 medals. This included three relays and seven individual events. Medals were won by skaters Apolo Anton Ohno, Shani Davis, Allison Baver, and many more. Ohno broke an American record with seven medals the most an American has ever won in the winter games. “It’s an amazing feeling,” he said. “To be mentioned along with some of the greatest names of all time… I’m very happy.” Ohno told The Chicago Tribune.

Shaun Roger White is a determined human being who is very naturally talented at sports such as skateboarding and, of course, snowboarding. He is only 23 and is still arguably one of the greatest snowboarders to ever live. Shaun White is a X Games champion with gold medals in both skateboarding and snowboarding. He also has medals in the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics. This combination of different competitions and events has made him one of the most recognizable sports figures of his time. Not to mention his distinguished looks with his long orange hair that makes him some what of a character.

Shaun White was born in San Diego, California in 1986. White experienced two major surgeries to correct a birth defect with his heart before he was a year old. These happened while he was in the womb. These injuries really only effected him in the early years of his life when he played soccer as a kid, but now, as you can see, he is one of the best athletes in the world, and it doesn’t seem to effect him.

His parents supported Shaun’s snowboarding ability and took him to the mountains as much as possible. Shaun entered his first amateur snowboard contest and won when he was only seven years old. This earned him an entry into Nationals, where he placed just outside of the top 10. His mom sent a sporting company a homemade video of Shaun just as the company was making a snowboard line for kids. They were impressed, and offered Shaun a sponsorship deal. The company, which was called Burton, helped him go pro at the age of 13.

This story leads us up to this year were White earned a gold medal in the final halfpipe. This was probably due to the help of a top secret halfpipe he used named “Project X.” White was asked “Knowing you had already won gold, what were you thinking heading into that last run?”

He replied with “The thing that I kept thinking in my mind was like, just don’t fall on this last run down. Because I didn’t want to be the guy that won and then like they are replaying it later on the news. And so I definitely, took my time to go down and celebrated with big airs.”

Shaun plans on continuing to win medals at both the Olympics and the X games, and to eventually have a loving family.

This year the Urbana High School girls track team is hoping to improve over last year. Last season the Lady Tigers took six events to the state meet in May, and this year’s goal is to take even more.

The girls’ team has made a few coaching changes. Assistant Coach Cristina Godoy stepped down and Peter Breit, who is also the assistant cross-country coach, has taken her place.

The Tigers had their first meet last weekend at Illinois State University in Bloomington. The meet went great for the Lady Tigers. Shelby Stevenson placed second in pole vault. “Everyone did good and we are looking forward to the next two indoor meets,” said Sophomore Heather Shrum.

The team’s next meet is the Big Twelve indoor conference on Friday, March 12. Following that meet, they have their annual Gene Armor Invitational at the University of Illinois’ armory. The team hosts this meet with over 80 teams and is done to honor Gene Armor, a former superintendent who did a lot for the men and women’s track team.

Coming up over spring break is indoor state where the coaches are trying to take as many girls as possible. The team already has a number of events going to the indoor state meet, and over the next two meets hopes to get more girls qualified for it. “It was exciting to make it to state and and a great experience, and hopefully more people will qualify this year,” said Sophomore and track State Qualifier Lateshia Dove.

The Lady Tigers are currently selling Krispy Kreme donuts as a fundraiser. The donuts sell for six dollars a dozen, and can be purchased from a track member. The donuts will be delivered on April 1 and will be fresh because Coach Boscolo will be picking them up from Indiana that day.
