A Guide For Freshmen: Starting Over And Finding Your Way

For many freshmen, the first year of high school can feel like stepping into a completely new world. New classes, new people and new expectations can make everything confusing at first. It is normal to feel nervous, lost on the first day or even scared.
For me, the experience was even more challenging because I had just left my country. I was far from everything I had ever known—my home, friends and comfort zone. I had to adapt not only to a new school but also to a new culture and language. At first, it felt like I didn’t belong anywhere. But if you are going through this, don’t waste the opportunity. Freshman Dulce Perez reflects, “Sometimes I felt like I was starting my life all over again, from zero.”
Little by little, I realized that feeling that way was part of the process. You don’t need to have everything figured out on the first day.“Joining something, even if you’re not perfect at it, can open doors you didn’t know existed,” said freshman Martin Uriarte
Sports, especially, can make a big difference. They help you stay active and teach teamwork, discipline and confidence. Being part of a team gives you a sense of belonging. Alem Garcia shared a similar idea. “On the field, it didn’t matter where I came from. I was just another teammate for my new team,” he said.
Of course, high school is not always easy. Balancing homework, practices and personal life can feel overwhelming, especially when there is a lot to do in one day. Freshman Aria Akmal says, “There are days when I felt exhausted, like everything was too much, but I keep going.”
High school is more than just grades and assignments. It’s a time to grow, spend time with friends in class and discover who you are.
For freshmen, the most important thing to remember is that you are never alone. Everyone is adjusting in their own way, even if it doesn’t seem like it.
Take your time, be patient with yourself and don’t be afraid to try new things, even if you are scared.
High school is not just a place to learn. It’s where you build a new version of yourself, step by step.
