Girls wrestling: Just getting started

As Urbana High School sports continue to increase, girls wrestling is one of them! Last year, for the first time ever, the Lady Tigers Wrestling team received their first-ever placard for being the 2025 Regional Champs, making Urbana history!
Many of the girls have been spending time in the wrestling room getting ready for the 2026 season, as well as trying to grow the sport by recruiting more athletes.
Two of the new recruits are sophomores Megan Mounka and Just’Us Jones.
“I feel welcomed, this team has been so welcoming making me feel like I’ve been on the team my whole life. Everyone is supportive and no one is discouraging. I never feel out of place, and I’m really happy that I joined the team,” Mounka said.
“I feel really excited for the season to start and I’m honored to be a part of a team with people who are so kind and open to teaching someone new,” added Jones.
The wrestlers are determined to embed their name in history even more by showing that they are making a difference in a male-dominated sport.
“I genuinely just feel really dominant and powerful. I am also really happy to have made our women’s team better in a way,” said junior Rickasia Ivy.
Many of the athletes on the team, including sophomore Violet Porter, are showing excitement for the new season and continue to want the sport to grow.
“We have grown since as a team and as individuals. I think our Lady Tigers are going to do amazing this year,” Porter said.
With their hard work, determination, teamwork, and passion for the sport, Urbana girls wrestling is just getting started.
