The word “team” is often tied to sports like soccer, football, or basketball. And yes, those are great examples of teamwork in action and players working together, trusting one another, and striving for a win. But the idea of being a team goes way beyond that.

A team isn’t just about sports or competition; it’s about connection, support, and shared goals. It’s about people coming together to help each other succeed in class, on the field, on stage, and in life. A school isn’t just a building filled with classrooms, it’s a team. And when that team works together, amazing things can happen.

So, what does it really mean to be part of a team?

Students and staff agree: a real team is a group of people who work together toward a common goal. It’s a team when everyone feels valued, when people help one another, share responsibility, and contribute equally. A team supports each other not just when things are going well, but also when things get tough.

And it isn’t just about winning. As junior Gwen McLean puts it, “a team is a group of people working together for a common goal.”

A good team is also a community helping one another to reach both shared and individual goals.

“A team is a support system. Whether you’ve had a bad race, a bad game… people who are willing to support you during practices, during games, and are just there to encourage you, advise, and just be there. That is what makes a team,” said junior Francette Musau.

Musau focused on athletics when talking about teamwork, but you don’t have to be wearing a jersey to be a teammate. Teamwork shows up in group projects when everyone pulls their weight. It’s there in student clubs working together to plan events. It’s in classrooms, when students listen respectfully to each other’s ideas. It’s in teachers supporting students, and students supporting each other.

“Equal contributions of every member of a team, when everyone listens to everyone, that’s what makes a team,” said junior Hannah Bouchama.

Let’s be honest, school can be tough. Whether you’re in sixth grade or senior year, managing classes, homework, extracurriculars, and personal challenges isn’t easy. Some days feel overwhelming. But when you have a team of classmates, teachers, friends who are there for you, it can make all the difference.

Being part of a team isn’t just about finishing an assignment or winning a game. It’s about showing up for each other and making our school a place where everyone feels like they belong. Every time we choose to help someone instead of ignoring them, listen instead of dismiss, or encourage instead of criticize we’re acting as a team.

At Urbana High School, we believe in kindness, resilience, and community. We believe that every student and staff member has something valuable to offer. Whether we’re celebrating a victory or working through a challenge, we do it together.

We are more than just a school.

We are a team.
