This is part 2 of My Top 5 Rap Groups.

Number 3: A Tribe Called Quest

In 1985 A Tribe Called Quest was formed, and it’s a good thing because hip hop wouldn’t be the same without them. A Tribe Called Quest is best known for combining the smooth sound of jazz and rough edginess of rap. They were the first to really make this sound popular. The group consists of the members Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. Q-Tip is my personal favorite and a great lyricist. I can’t really think of one favorite song of ATCQ (A Tribe Called Quest). My favorite album is The Low End Theory. I really think that if you have never listened to them, you should most definitely check out ATCQ.

Number 2: The Roots

Classic. That’s one great word to describe The Roots. The Roots have a very soulful feel to their sound. At the same time, a very poetic and wise feeling. The lead vocalist named Black Thought, is very lyrical and poetic rapper who is full of wisdom and has great flow. Also the drummer, Quest Love, is great asset to the band. That leads me to my next point. The Roots are one of the few Hip Hop groups to use real instruments to create the base of their beats. This creates a more organic sound and an even more soulful edge to them. One of my favorite songs from The Roots is the song called “What They Do.” This a song that makes fun of the typical rap basics. The video also does this. I recommend watching that video and listening to The Roots. Peace.

  1. Good job representing some REAL hip-hop, way to go Eli. Keep the writing up, especially if it’s Roots related.
