nutrcracker
Going to see The Nutcracker Ballet is not an original idea for the holidays, but it is a classic that never fails to put you into the highest of holiday spirits. This weekend’s rendition at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts did not disappoint.
The Nutcracker was first performed in Russia in 1892 and is set to the music of Tchaikovsky. It is the story of Clara who, while at her parents holiday party, receives a nutcracker from Herr Drosselmeyer. However, her pesky younger brother, Fritz, breaks the Nutcracker out of jealousy. Herr Drosselmeyer fixes the Nutcracker for Clara, though, and she continues to be quite infatuated with her new gift. That night, when she goes to sleep, she dreams of traveling a magical land with the Nutcracker.
The Champaign Urbana Ballet has been performing The Nutcracker every winter in many years past. This year’s was up to the standard that the community has come to expect. An elegant setting, beautiful costumes, stunning choreography and dazzling performances could be seen throughout the night. Another upside of seeing the local performance is the fact that it showcases some of the most talented dancers and musicians in the Champaign Urbana area.
Showings of the Nutcracker were held at the Krannert Center on Friday, December 4, Saturday, December 5 and Sunday, December 6. If you missed out on this elegant tradition, the next ballet at Krannert is Coppelia. It will be performed by the world renowned Moscow Festival Ballet and held on Tuesday, January 19, Wednesday, January 20 and Thursday, January 21, 2010. If your looking for a holiday experience, the Champaign  Urbana Symphony Orchestra will be having their holiday concert at Krannert on Thursday, December 10. Other holiday events in the area include A Christmas Carol at Parkland College on December 11, December 12, December 13, December 19 and December 20

  1. I primarily go to Krannert for music, not dance, performances, but I think it’s great they continue to have this community-involved ballet.
