When an earthquake struck the small country of Haiti on January 12th, most of the country was completely ruined. Haiti is one of poorest countries in the western hemisphere. When news of the Earthquake hit, many organizations began doing their part to help the Haitian people.

“It is important for students to learn to take action when there is a need or an injustice in the world.  Whether it is a neighbor or people as far away as Haiti, when we see people in need we should help” Said Mr. Foley

Mr. Foley and Ms. Dahlke’s Sociology class is working on many projects that will benefit Haiti. They hope that their students will learn al lot about helping people from the fundraisers. “It’s important for students to be aware of the other things that are happening far way,” Said Ms. Dahlke.

The class is selling shirts, bracelets and hosting a bake sale. The shirts are ten dollars and the designs are being displayed throughout the school. Students can order a shirt from Mr. Foley or Ms.Dahlke.

Students, teachers and parents can also make monetary pledges which will be based on how many point that boys’ basketball team makes against cross-town rival Centennial on February 5th. All proceeds from the fundraiser will go to UNICEF and from there it will go to Haiti.

“Our goal of sociology class is to help the community and find a way to make Urbana part of something bigger than itself,” said Senior Erika Marion who is in the class.

So make sure you come out for the basketball at the Middle school. For questions or to get involved contact Mr. Foley (mfoley@usd116.org) or Ms.Dahlke (edahlke@usd116.org).
