Spring is just around the corner, which means the much awaited picnics and bike rides are too- along with shopping, naturally. Here are some top trends from the Spring/ Summer runways that were showcased last fall. Many of the trends this year were not particularly out there, and could easily be found at local thrift shops to fit your high school budget.

Bow headpieces

We’re still seeing 80’s references from Marc by Marc Jacobs, like the bright colors of the bow head wraps seen on nearly all of his S/S 2010 looks. Colorful headwraps add a fun touch to otherwise simple outfits, but plain black bows can be a staple accessory for many spring looks. When wearing such hairpieces, hair looks best simply pulled back- you don’t want to overdo it.

Menswear blazers

These blazers have been big for a while now- and the basic don’t seem to be going anywhere soon. The menswear inspiration doesn’t mean your blazer should be huge; there are plenty of sleek, somewhat fitted options. The Marc Jacobs look features a belt to synch in the waist, but blazers look great open over t-shirts or dresses, as well. If you invest in a blazer, it makes a wonderful basic- especially for spring days when it’s not quite warm enough to go without a jacket.

Knee highs

Knee highs seem like a more common trend in fall, but, as seen on the runways, are also great for spring. Alexander Wang showed them pulled up, while they were seen scrunched at Burberry Prorsum. Either way, cream looks great with the light pastel colors palette that is often used for spring. Any color looks great with dresses when it’s not quite warm enough to go bare legged.

White dresses

White dresses were a huge trend on the runways this year, seen at Yves St. Laurent, Hermes, Cacharel, Calvin Klein and Alice and Olivia. Most of the dresses fit into one of two categories: sleek and structured or soft and feminine. The one seen at Alice and Olivia was soft, for example. Such dresses are best in cotton fabrics. Either type, though, is a great basic for spring. It can be worn simply in the summer with a pair of sandals, or with a cardigan or jacket and flats in the spring.

Belted cardigans

Belted cardigans are wonderful for spring, because cardigans keep you warm in slightly chilly days, but belts keep the look fitted and fashion forward. A big trend in belts right now is woven, but Anna Sui showed really fashionable striped belts. As far as cardigans go, prints and details make it interesting, but plain cardigans look better if you’re already wearing multiple prints.

Vintage- inspired stripes

Stripes looks great in so many widths and colors, such as Alexander Wang’s red and cream wide stripes. Nautical inspired stripes are huge right now and are great in red and cream or blue and white. The Alexander Wang look showed that the stripes were great with several other S/S 2010 trends, long side braids and knee highs.

Military inspired

The military trend was big last fall, and we see it continuing into this season. Military jackets look great with soft, contrasting colors or “rock and roll” with similarly tough skinny jeans and hardwear. Along with jackets, medals are another really cool military inspired trend. Such medals were seen at Balmain’s S/S 2010 runway.

Simplistic trench

A trench is a really classic spring trend, and it continues to be in style today. Trenches were, of course, seen at Burberry Prorsum, whom are famous for such outerwear. They could also be found at Erin Featherston, tied over light, airy dresses with statement jewelry. Lighter colored trenches are currently more fashionable then the darker tans.
