Ah, who smells it? Yes, that’s right, College Basketball season is back, ladies and gentlemen. The Fighting Illini are here and they look better than ever! After a great 2004-2005 championship run, Bruce Weber’s club is taking an unexpected halt for any type of run in the last few years.
After missing the big dance (NCAA Tournament) two out of the last five years, and that’s having Illini fans questioning their loyalty towards Weber, but that’s not the only thing. His recruiting ability has raised eyebrows as he was unable to land a couple of Illinois native players in the past few years, and that has definitely would have changed the outcome of those seasons.
After a disappointing 21-15 season last year, the Illini failed to make the NCAA tournament. But good thing Senior guard Demetri McCamey and Senior forward Mike Davis withdrew their names out of the draft because their stocks fell this year and now they come back to their team and try to win a national title. With promising freshmen Jereme Richmond who gives them rebounding and scoring ability, Crandall Head who is a great shooter, and Myers Leonard who brings a big-man presence.
This team looks deeper than ever. Starting the season off right, as they are in the top 25 polls, and with a tough schedule ahead including Texas, North Carolina, Gonzaga, and Missouri. And not to mention the packed Big Ten conference that has six teams that can battle for the title. Hopefully the fighting Illini have enough fight to last them till Houston?
