American student Amanda Knox was convicted of murdering her 21-year-old British roommate, Meredith Kercher, back in 2007.

Kercher was found in a pool of blood and covered by a duvet, sexually assaulted and stabbed to death in the apartment she shared with Knox.

The trial was held in Italy, Knox and Kercher attended school in Perugia, and included an eight-member jury. The deliberation lasted for 11 hours, ultimately convicting Knox and then-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito of murder.

Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison, Sollecito 25.

DNA evidence found at the crime scene used to convict Knox and Sollecito has since been discredited. These irregularities and uncertain evidence put the conviction into serious question.

Following an appeal, Knox was freed, on October 3 of this year. She left Perugia and returned to her home in Seattle after spending four years in prison.

Charges against Sollecito were also dropped.

There is a great deal of controversy surrounding the recent acquittal. Some believe Knox is innocent, others say she is guilty, but the victim’s family still need answers and justice.

Urbana High School’s librarian, Matthew Murrey, says, “The irony, which a lot of people noticed, was that this happened just after Troy Davis was executed. He was almost certainly not guilty of the crime he was executed for.”

The question still remains; if Knox isn’t guilty, then who is?
