It’s been seven long years since the Urbana boy’s football team has defeated Central High School. Urbana is not only fighting for their town and school, but for the Wright St. Trophy, as well. Urbana hopes for their first victory of the 2012 football season this Friday, August 31st at Urbana High School at 7pm.

Last time the Tigers beat the Central Maroons was on _____, 2005, when Coach Hoskins was the head coach. When asked if Urbana is going to win the game and why, Senior Cameron Mammen said, “Most Def! Because we have been working a lot harder and we are physically and mentally prepared. Plus [Central] lost a lot of key players.” Senior Mikshadd Townsend also said, “Yes, because we put in more hours of training and we are just flat out better than them. We are also faster, better, stronger, and we just look better than them.”

Last year going into the 4th quarter, Urbana was winning 28-24 over Central. However, Central caught a slant with less than 10 seconds left and scored. But they didn’t go for the extra point; instead they went for the two-point conversion and succeeded. There were a lot of broken hearts and disappointment in Urbana that night. Senior Tanner Laznik said, “I still feel we need to get them back because the loss last year was bad and we deserved to win. We put in hard work into our season, especially for this game versus Central.”

Many players and coaches from Urbana believe that this is the turn-around year for Urbana. When asked what are some advantages that Urbana has over Central, junior Tanner Russell said, “I think some advantages we have over Central is that we have a better bond with our team, we are more athletic, and condition more.”

Coach Watson has worked very hard improving the football program since he arrived to the school and became the new head coach four years ago. Making an incredible improvement last year with a record of four wins and five losses, Watson and his players have already made huge progress. To win the game on Friday, Watson said, “We have team speed and I have been here for four years and Central hired a new head coach.”

Come out on Friday, August 31st and paint the stands orange and black at 7pm, at Urbana High School. The Urbana football team will appreciate all the support from the school and town for this memorable win!
