The hostess snacks that are loved by so many may become a thing of the past very soon. The Hostess brand is in bankruptcy court again.
Hostess is the maker of the famous Ding Dongs, Ho Hos, Suzy Q’s, Dolly Madison Zingers, Drake’s Ring Dings, and Twinkies and has been a part of many sweets lovers’ lives for a very long time.
“I believe businesses today are going bankrupt because they are spending too much, and making too little,” said Urbana High School Sophomore Hanna Lafond-Hyman.
Hostess was founded in 1930 and is a brand of the Interstate Bakeries Corporation in the United States. Hostess is now going bankrupt because the company has been proposing huge pay and benefit cuts, and the workers have been on strike.
If approved, Hostess will shut down, resulting in the loss of 18,300 jobs throughout their factories. They have 36 bakeries total and over 550 distribution centers. Many are wondering if Hostess will make a come back.
“That’s a hard one to call, because both sides have to come willing to compromise. And at this point that’s not happening,” said UHS Technology Coordinator Carol Godoy.
As of Dec. 7, 2012, Hostess has bumped layoffs up by 30 percent, and isn’t doing any better.
