The Italian Supreme Court has decided that U.S. student Amanda Knox, who was charged in Italy for the murder of Meredith Kercher in 2007, will be retried. The trial will take place sometime in 2013 or 2014. Prior to this decision, Knox and the-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were acquitted in 2010 after spending four years in an Italian prison.

Knox and Sollecito were originally convicted in 2009 during a controversial trial that captured the world’s attention. Questionable DNA evidence lead to the pair’s eventual acquittal.

Knox’s lawyer Carlo Dalla Vedova said Knox “was sad” and “believed the nightmare was over,” reported The New York Times.

Knox also released a statement of her own, “…the prosecution’s theory of my involvement in Meredith’s murder has been repeatedly revealed to be completely unfounded and unfair.” [As reported by The New York Times]

Kercher, who was Knox’s roommate, was found brutally murdered in her apartment in Perugia on Nov. 1, 2007. Since then, Knox has built a new life for herself in Seattle, spending time with her new boyfriend and attending school. However, Kercher’s family is still searching for answers — and for justice — in a murder case that continues to unfold years later.
