The Urbana High School (UHS) Athletics Department will be hosting a 5K and Junior 1K on Sunday, Sept. 29. After the race, sorbet and frozen yogurt will be available, and water, fruit and other healthy snacks will be available all day.
“[The proceeds are] for weight room upgrades,” Amy Boscolo, event coordinator, said, they can’t name the weight room after someone until it has proper equipment.
The weight room will be renamed the “John Gremer Strength and Conditioning Facility” to honor the late John Gremer, who taught and coached at UHS for a long time and was respected in the community.
“John Gremer taught [at UHS] for many years and is in the UHS Hall of Fame for wrestling and football as a coach,” said Boscolo.
Runners and volunteers are still welcome to sign up on UHS’s website or with Amy Boscolo (aboscolo@usd116.org). Runners will check in from 7:00 a.m. to 7:45 a.m., and the race will begin promptly at 8:00 a.m.. The 5K route takes runners through many streets named for states and is a scenic path. Anyone can participate in the 5K run for $25 and anyone 10 years old or younger can participate in the 1K for $10. All runners must register before Sept. 20. to receive a T-shirt, but day-of registration will be accepted.
“I am volunteering to get more athletic programs interested in the Echo because a lot of Echo funding comes from athletics programs,” Journalist Abrianna Uher said.
According to UHS’s National Honor Society, up to six hours of volunteering are available. Some jobs volunteers can do are stand on the route to direct runners and help keep the kids organized during the 1K run. Those who would like to volunteer should see Boscolo for more details and options.
The event’s “Tiger Pride” level sponsors are Crystal Entertainment, PowerMax, Meijer, Charter Fitness, Dairy Queen, and Roy Douglas LG Seeds.
