Convicted kidnapper and rapist Ariel Castro, 53, was found hanged by a bed sheet in his prison cell o n Sept. 3. He was serving a life sentence at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio, for holding three women captive in his Cleveland home for 10 years.

Castro was convicted on 937 counts and received a sentence of 1,000 years in prison instead of the death penalty for his crimes against Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight.

Police are investigating how Castro was able to kill himself without anyone catching him. Reports indicate officers only checked on his cell every 30 minutes, and prison medical staff was not aware he was suicidal.

Kurstin Fly-Dent, a freshman at UHS, said, “He should have suffered for what he did to them because he got off too easy, and I feel he didn’t serve his time to suffer the way that they did.”

Castro had kidnapped the women by asking them if they needed a ride somewhere. Each woman was kidnapped separately. He kept the women chained and captive in his house. The windows were boarded up from the inside.

The women finally escaped when a neighbor heard their screams for help and broke the front door to reach them. When the women were rescued, they were malnourished and dehydrated.

Castro is no longer alive to pay for his crimes, but the women are alive and working to move forward with their new lives.
