Black Friday or Black Thursday? The Holiday Shopping Debate

Black Friday or Black Thursday? This is one of the first years that Black Friday shopping started on the Thursday before, which is Thanksgiving. It’s still kind of a new thing. On Thanksgiving, families gather together to visit and share what they are thankful for. Now, Black Friday cuts into Thanksgiving. Instead of the big sales starting early in the morning on Friday, they now begin at eight at night on Thursday. Some people say it doesn’t make sense because its Black Friday not Thursday, and its always been a tradition to eat, hang out with family and rest, and then go out at two in the morning to hit the sales. Others feel rushed because the sales start earlier so that’s less quality time with their family.

Grace Chariya, sophomore said, “It was weird. I felt like it rushed people’s Thanksgivings and they didn’t get to spend as much time with their family as they normally do.”

Black Friday shopping is very popular, and about 14% of shoppers did go out and start shopping Thursday night. It might not be a big deal to some people, but there are a lot of families out there that would want that time to spend with their family. That is what Thanksgiving is all about. Black Friday should remain on Friday. Stores should keep it the way they had it before instead of staying open Thursday night. Especially since some workers work all day Thanksgiving day and do not get to spend time with their families.

Jessica Lynch, sophomore said, “It doesn’t make much sense to be thankful all day for what you have and then fight people to get 40% off of a new TV.”

Black Friday should not be moved to Thanksgiving, the Thursday before. It’s a tradition and should remain on Friday.
