If you look at the halls of UHS, you would assume that hockey is probably the most watched event in America that is in the Olympics.  It clearly has the most representation of all Olympic games in our halls, as many different people wore UHS Hockey Jerseys today; Math Teacher Dan Bechtel and Counselor Marc Solodky to name a few.   In fact, The Americans have two great teams that have a lot of depth. The Men and Women Hockey Teams are off to a killer start in Sochi and both teams are looking to bring home the Gold.

So far the Men have been playing very well, they advanced out of their group because they had played the best out of the four teams in their group. Out of their three group matches the beat Slovakia 7-1, they tied a great Russia team 2-2 and lastly they beat Slovenia 5-1.

After these three matches they advanced into the quarterfinal game against the Czech Republic. This is the part of the Hockey event where when you lose you are done. Luckily, the US men did not lose this game. They advanced into the semifinal by beating Czech Republic 5-2. Their next opponent has yet to be decided.

The women of the U.S. are having just as good of a run as the men’s team, if not a better run. They advanced out of their group just like the men did. The won their first game against Finland 3-1, then won their next game against Switzerland with an outstanding score of 9-0, sadly they lost their last game against Canada 3-2.

Even after a loss, the Women’s team still had a good enough record to advance. In the next round the women did not play in a quarterfinal. In their semifinal match they beat Sweden 6-1.

The final match for this US Women’s Hockey team is on Feb. 20th at 11:00. Check back at uhsecho.com for more Hockey and Olympic updates!
