Pennsylvania Gay Marriage Ban Overturned

On Tuesday, May 20th, U.S. District Judge John E. Jones III overturned the Pennsylvania same-sex marriage banned that had been in the state.

Attorney General Kathleen Kane was reported by New York Times as saying that “unconstitutional” and that refused to defend it.

This is an event that is occurring all over the country when last year the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act or DOMA. Same-sex marriage is now legal in 18 states and if Jones decisions stands, Pennsylvania could become the 19th state to legalize same-sex marriage.

The law inflicts emotional pain on same-sex couples and their children as it can deprive them of legal standing and tax benefits that are afforded to married couples.
