Aren’t puppies cute? This article isn’t about if dogs are better than cats. It’s instead about how animals have the ability to cheer people up.

A 16-yr-old cancer patient by the name of Anthony Lyons from Phoenix Arizona was diagnosed with Leukemia in July.

Lyons received dog visits from therapy dogs sometimes once to two times a week according to diyphotography.net. The dogs were a highlight to Lyons day at the hospital. The dogs that visit Lyons had the ability to put a smile on his face.

A family friend saw how well the dogs were received by Lyons and decided to create a Facebook event where people could join and post photos of their dogs to brighten Lyons day. The event soon went viral. There are currently 434k people attending the event and over another 220k have been invited according to diyphotography.net. Posts have come from around the world from troops in Afghanistan to England.

“It really helps, the pet therapy,” says Lyons. “Like I can be in here having a really bad day and then one of the dogs will show up and it will be the highlight of the day,” according to Foxphoenix.com.

The photos show how people can use the Internet to promote positive things to people they wouldn’t otherwise be able to reach.

“I think that social media can be an outlet for people and help them through their hard times,” said Naphtali Harris Sophomore.

Facebook isn’t only to stalk what people are doing or judge someone for his or her new relationship status. Facebook is also a great place to bring awareness to topics people otherwise wouldn’t know.

Social media has that special ability of bringing people together by promoting awareness to events.

Here’s a challenge the next time you go on Facebook, try to promote something positive. Whether it is making an event or sending someone a nice message. Do something nice for someone, it might go a long way.
