Sunday, September 16th, at 1:02 am, several residents along the east side of UMS on Vine reported hearing gunshots. The police were promptly called in, reporting a broken window and some damage to an exterior wall. They held a small investigation, reporting that they believe that there was no target and that there was no indication this was intentional.

In an email addressed to UMS staff, Don Owen wrote “Please be alert and use caution if and when you work in the building on weekends or late at night.”

Parents were not notified until a later date. In a post on the Urbana School’s Parent Advocacy Group, Kelly Stevenson wrote, “As far as the shooting incident to UMS goes we just feel we should have been informed yesterday right away, not after a parent heard about it and questioned it.”

The police did arrest a suspect, a Champaign man, who happened to be driving around the area during the time. He was driving with an open bottle of alcohol and had an outstanding warrant in another county, but the police did not connect him to the damage at the UMS.

As of now, no one has been found responsible.
