Student’s thoughts on police presence at UHS

This year there has been a shocking number of fights, leading to what seems like, in students eyes, an increase in police presence at school.

Police occasionally patrolling the hallways is meant to make the school feel safer, yet for some students, it is having the opposite effect.

“I’ve seen way more police this year than in my last three years here. I feel scared. It’s not a comforting sight,” says senior Grace Yepez-Connors.

Senior Elin Skottene agrees. “It makes me worried that the school is in danger.”

Student Interventionist Eric Morrow sees police presence differently: “I would rather us to air on the side of doing more than less,”

Morrow also believes the police presence isn’t too much. “I don’t think we overdo… it’s quick… in, out, done.”

Student’s negative reactions to police presence might be a symptom of a bigger issue: school safety at Urbana. Though those in charge are trying to make it a safer place it is not connecting with students.
