Candlestick Lane tradition continues

Christmas is full of traditions and one of the most memorable traditions that is still going on is something called Candlestick Lane. Candlestick Lane, located between Cottage Grove and Philo Road in Urbana, is where multiple houses decorate their houses with many different colors and lights and people bring their families to see the beauty.

Candlestick Lane has gone on for years and has been a tradition for your parents and even your grandparents.

The tradition started in 1963 when the Illinois Power Company decided to hold a christmas light decorating contest. Since then people have decorated their homes with lights and holiday decorations weeks before Christmas.

“It got pretty extravagant,” said Charlie Halpin, whose mother is one of three remaining families who were part of the original display.

This year, Urbana’s Candlestick Lane will once again bring Christmas cheer to fans all over the area, so check it out!
