Time Magazine names journalists People Of The Year

Time Magazine has recently announced that Journalists who have been targeted for their work have been named Time’s annual people of the year.

The Time article showcased journalists who laid down their lives to do their job. This included Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed for uncovering the secrets inside the Saudi Arabian government; The Capital Gazette staff, who were gunned down at the Maryland state capital newspaper over reporting of a man’s guilty plea; Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, Reuters journalists sentenced to seven years in prison for breaking a colonial-era law while reporting on Myanmar’s mass killing of Rohingya Muslims; and Maria Ressa, who was legally harassed by Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte after critical reporting on his government.

Michael Tessene, junior, believes this is something that could have happened a long time ago. “There have been journalists being killed throughout the world for a long time. Because of the killing of Jamal Khashoggi it has become politically relevant in America and that is why this [story] is happening.”

Steven Thompson, senior, believes, “…it is really sad that people have been imprisoned or are being killed for just doing their jobs.”

As we prepare for the end of this year, we remember those who sacrificed for their line of work. For doing something that they love, for uncovering the truth, and for doing their job.

  1. This is a wonderful article! It’s so important to remember that not everyone, everywhere, has the same freedom we have in the US. When people think of sacrificing their lives, they usually think of civil servants like police, firefighters, or military, but we have religious clergy and journalists who put their lives on the line every day as well. What they do is simply courageous and honorable. Again, great article!

  2. Thanks Tonya for the awesome review! If you get a chance make sure to check out more stories on The Echo!
