Last week, during roof repairs, a misunderstanding between roofing professionals and school administration disrupted the school day because of the smell of roofing glue.

Part of the roof replacement requires a glue to be applied to the roof. The smell entered the building by way of the air handlers.

Assistant Principal and Coordinator of Athletics and Facilities Stephen Waller says there is “no health concern regarding the product,” though the smell may have disrupted some students’ learning. “Since then, the district and high school administrators have worked with the roofing company to adjust the hours in which the glue is being applied to ensure there are no further disruptions to the school day.”

All gluing will now occur after 3:00 pm, with one exception. When the high roof above the gyms needs to be glued, it will occur during the school day. He says the smell should not be able to make its way into the building because the air vents will be taped off.

He says the work will be completed around the end of September, assuming no weather delays.
