ChatGPT’s influence and impact on the education system

1

ChatGPT has been all over the media these past few weeks and for the right reason. The public has never had access to A.I. this developed before. You don’t need a genius to tell you that giving the public access to such capable and applicable A.I. would lead to it being abused, no matter the circumstance. And unfortunately for the education system, ChatGPT has shown that A.I. is en route to becoming a real-life problem for teachers, professors, and schools worldwide.

As technology advances, it indirectly affects how teachers are meant to teach and how students are meant to learn. A great example of this is the calculator and how in the modern day it is a key part of teaching math. The calculator being integrated into schools worldwide has completely changed what we teach, the way we teach, and what we think is “necessary” to teach. Now we have reached the point with ChatGPT/A.I where it might make the same leap into the classroom just like the calculator.

Unfortunately, having access to ever-evolving and improving technology can hamper one’s ability to learn, especially the younger you are. Brandon Birkhead, English teacher, went on to explain that “the thing with younger students is that they need to be taught the basics of writing, so if they are just jumping immediately into ChatGPT, they’re not really learning those things.”

Art Banister, who also teaches English, describes this issue as “representative of people becoming more and more reliant on technology, particularly artificial intelligence.”

Banister went on to explain that teachers are “pushed to rely on technology even in the classroom. So it’s not [surprising] that when students are [so] used to technology being integrated with learning that ChatGPT seems like a natural next step for them.”

And because of that, now teachers are starting to think about changing their curriculum to make sure one cannot just use ChatGPT to do an assignment. Birkhead said that now teachers “always have to be cognizant of [students using ChatGPT on assignments].” With Banister even admitting their curriculum needs changing, though they are “not sure what that looks like yet.”

Though there is still a lot of debate and questions being asked about A.I in the classroom setting, Birkhead believes that its integration is “inevitable.” He went on to add that “I can picture it being something that could be [used as a tool in a classroom setting], but you’d need to plan around it. It’s not just something that we could insert today and do that.”

No matter the case, whether you are against it like Banister, who believes “removing technology from the writing process is actually a benefit.” Or whether you are for it, one thing is almost for certain, and that is that A.I is here to stay.

Like Birkhead said, “[A.I] is just something we have to embrace.”
