Fat? Thick? In between? Having the “ideal” body type has become a goal in society today. Many women are classified in only a few categories, but then again is it really just a few? Words like fat, thick, skinny, curvy and slender are just some of the more common ones.

According to many Urbana High School students, a girl is considered thick if she has big thighs, a large bottom and a slender or semi slender waist line.

Freshman Unique Jefferson says, “Thick girls have curves; it’s not all over the place.”

So based on what students, especially young women, think and say, a “fat” girl is usually a girl who has more of an apple shape rather than a pear shape. Some groups in society have definitely made curvier women the more attractive body type.

In the African American culture, women seem to be much more appreciated when they have more weight to them. In other cultures, curvy women are seldom viewed as attractive, and often not nearly as accepted. There are many classes at UHS that spend time discussing the diverse cultures within our school, and students and teachers often have scholarly conversations on beauty, body types and society.

Women are viewed as sex objects, merely because of their body types. The fact still remains that everyone is an individual and is entitled to feel confident and beautiful with whatever body type they have been given. Fat or thick; will this debate ever cease?
