Students and staff speak out about new hallway rule

On October 13th during the last 10 minutes of the first period, an announcement came over the speaker. If students were in the hallways after the bell rang or in the halls in general without a pass, they were going to be sent home.

Overall, staff members were supportive of the new rule. “More of my students have been showing up on time,” said math teacher Kaitlyn Pugh.

PE teacher Forrest Farokhi says, “significantly fewer students are in the gym and that has never happened before, so it is working,” though he admitted this strategy might work “maybe for only a couple of weeks.”

However, many students had different opinions.

Junior Lataya Kirk said, “It’s lame because you’re getting suspended and the passing period isn’t long enough. What if you have stuff to do as a woman or you’re trying to talk to your teacher or if you have to stop by your locker?”

“I was followed all the way to class by [a staff member] around the hallway. The policy should only be applied to people skipping,” added senior Yahaira Groves.

Sophomore Marcus Jackson expressed that the new rule “makes me feel like a prisoner, and I don’t have freedom.”

“Fewer kids have been in the hallways than usual, but it still isn’t helping [as much as it could] and I think the rules should only be temporary,” said staff member Shamika Caston.

With many staff saying they don’t think this will last, while students also saying they’re still going to do what they want, perhaps this isn’t the solution to our problem
