The Green Tigers had their first meeting after school last Thursday, in what is sure to be a productive year for them. The adviser for the group, science teacher Matt Sly, welcomed the new and returning students. “I hope this will be a good year for us” he said. “We had a lot of people show up last year, so hopefully it will be the same.”

Engineer’s Without Borders (EWB), a not-for-profit group from the University of Illinois, also made an appearance. Engineers without Borders, a group dedicated to improving communities across the the world through efficiency and environmental awareness, have been working closely with The Green Tigers over the summer on an ambitious project to “audit” the school’s energy consumption. “From turning on a light, to flushing the toilet, basically everything we use and take for granted consumes energy” said the visiting group. The idea behind the audit, according to EWB, is to expose just how much energy we use on a daily basis.

The group also discussed selling chemical-free stainless steel water bottles, through cooperation with local natural food stores, Common Ground Food Co-op, and Strawberry Fields, as well as talking about a new t-shirts made with 100% organic and sustainable cotton.

Elections for leadership positions will not be held until the week of September 7.
