Golden Globes and SAG Awards Fashion

Every year, millions of viewers tune into the Golden Globes and, less than a week later, the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The awards given out are not the only memorable part of each evening, but what the talented actors and actresses wear on the red carpet, as well. A number of stars attend both events, and, in comparison, can sport completely different looks. See whether your favorite stars looked loathsome in Luella, marvelous in Marchesa, or both.

Kate Hudson
Golden Globes
Hudson’s white Marchesa gown was certainly an edgy look, but seemed overly complicated. The stiff fabric on top made the entire gown slightly awkward and off-kilter. However, this gown easily could have looked worse, if not for how well Hudson wore it.

A second white gown for the week, this time Hudson donned a slinky Emillo Pucci floor length dress. The front off the gown looked streamlined, while the deep plunge in the back added interest. The silver detailing at the side, small silver earrings and soft makeup and hair completed the ‘Nine’ star’s look perfectly.

Drew Barrymore

Golden Globes:

One of the most talked about gowns of the evening, Barrymore’s nude Atelier Versace did not bore. The sea anemone-esque embellishment at the Grey Gardens actress’ shoulder was perfect, but the hip embellishment could have been done with out. However, Barrymore pulled this off. Her styling was perfect, as her hair, makeup and shoes didn’t distract from the already attention grabbing gown, and anything more would have been way too much.

This two tiered navy Monique Lhuillier would have been completely stunning, if not for Barrymore’s styling. Unlike her nearly perfect styling at the Golden Globes, the disheveled hair and nude makeup took away from the otherwise elegant look.

Jenna Fischer

The Halston dress that The Office actress sported was not the most flattering cut. It’s droopy draped top and awkwardly pieced together bottom just didn’t seem to work.

Actress Jenna Fischer arrives at the 16th Annual Screen Actors G
Fischer went with a jeweled top Marchesa gown for the SAG Awards. The dazzle of the bodice of the dress, along with the shiny earrings and clutch went overboard. Fischer’s pulled together hair and the vibrant blue on the bottom of the gown do, somewhat, make up for the aforementioned overkill.

Diane Kruger

Golden Globes:

59313362

Although she is often stunning on the red carpet, Kruger’s hot pink Christian Lacroix turned out to be more of a hot mess. The color was by far the worst thing about the gown, but the strange ruffles and white bow certainly didn’t help. The best thing about the German-born actress’ Golden Globes night look? Her glamorous hair, that nicely framed the Chanel earrings she wore.

The Inglorious Bastards star chose another daring color for the red carpet, but this time it worked perfectly. Kruger’s mustard Jason Wu gown reminded everyone of the style star she truly is. Everything about this look worked from perfect curve hugging silhouette of the gown to the red lip to the braided updo to the Fred Leighton drop earrings.
Winner: SAG Awards

Marion Cotillard

Golden Globes:

59313808
The French actress wore a teal Christian Dior to this years awards ceremony. The color looked lovely on Cotillard, as did the sculpted one shouldered silhouette. The lace detailing is a yay and nay, in my opinion. It makes the high slit more elegant, but is reminiscent of a slip that is sticking out of your dress.

SAG Awards:

In theory, the Nine stars SAG Awards gown sounds great. Her Elie Saab dress was above the knee, white and breaded, all of which would look chic and fabulous on Cotillard, right? Sadly, the dress disappoints it’s description. What should have looked perfect seemed bulky. Two things that did turn out perfectly: Cotillard’s side swept bun and emerald ring.
Winner: Golden Globes

Sandra Bullock

Golden Globes:

SANDRA-BULLOCK
Purple is supposed to be the color of royalty, and Bullock looks the part in this Bottega Veneta gown. The dress could have looked even better with a less shiny, sheer fabric. But, overall, this look shined in a good way.

The Blindside star’s Alexander McQueen gown also hit a good fashion note. This gown’s silhouette did all of the right things, and made her look tall and beautiful. The cobalt blue beads added interest and shine to Bullock’s gown.
Winner: SAG Awards

Tina Fey

Golden Globes:

Everything was a little odd about Fey’s Zac Posen dress, from the length to the print to the volume at the bottom. Fey’s shoes were odd, as well, but they worked in more of the whimsical way the dress should have.

SAG Awards:

This Salvatore Ferragamo purple number may not have been nearly as interesting as her Golden Globes choice. But the somewhat plunging neckline, color and length all worked for Fey. Her shoes and clutch also looked great and added much needed the shimmer to the look. The only thing missing was the risk.
Winner: SAG Awards
Lea Michelle

Golden Globes:

59312902

A big black gown could have been easily overwhelming on Michelle, but the Glee star took a risk and it worked. The Oscar de la Renta gown made the new star look like a princess.

SAG Awards:

59381148
This Malandrino gown worked perfectly for Michelle, and proved that she can pull off many different looks. The lighter of her two dresses this week, the emerald color and ruffles on the shoulder made the dress interesting, but much simpler.
Winner: SAG Awards

Penelope Cruz

Golden Globes:

I really want to love this Atelier Versace dress, but there’s just something about it that doesn’t seem… right. The different pieces of the dress, the striped bodice, mermaid tiers and lace top, seem somewhat disjointed. Even with so many effects, it still doesn’t seem new or interesting. However, Cruz looks stunning under her umbrella.

SAG Awards:

The shimmer in this L’Wren Scott dress makes it fun, as do the fringy bits on her shoulders. But, again, something doesn’t fit. This time, I think it the length that hindered this dress from being just right. Although, her hair and shoes fit in perfectly with the dress.

Golden Globes:

The An Education actress chose a navy blue, strapless Nina Ricci gown for the evening. Although I love the top of the dress, the black ruffles at the bottom kind of ruin it for me. They almost look pasted on, and the gown could have stood without them. Also, I strongly dislike the headband Mulligan sported. It just doesn’t look elegant to me, and seemingly looks bedazzled.

SAG Awards:

59385324

This mermaid silhouetted Lavin gown was just the right color on Mulligan, but the way the shape was coerced seemed stiff with the fabric. Again, the top worked perfectly.
Winner: SAG Awards

Christina Hendricks

Golden Globes:

59313953

This Christain Siriano gown was perfectly fitted to the Mad Men star’s curves. The champagne pink was also perfect against Hendrick’s pale skin, and her red lips provided a perfect jolt of color.

SAG Awards:

This time, Hendrick’s wore a much brighter color, with her red, bow shouldered Carolina Herrera gown. The color and fit of this gown were, again, perfect. However, the matchy red shoes are not my forte.
