With a new school year come different changes in school policies, new clubs and extracurricular activities, class sizes, new faces in the hallways, job switches around the faculty members- the list goes on. This is not new to Urbana High School. There’s no denying that things were shook up a little bit this school year in UHS. Let’s say for example, one of the changes the high school is facing in this 2010-2011 school year is having a brand new dean. She is Mrs. Angi Franklin.

Franklin was the former adviser of the UHS choir club. However, this job has been recently passed to Mr. Douse says Franklin.

“He was my student teacher from the University of Illinois in the past spring,” Franklin says.

This year, Franklin’s taking a bigger step and is now working as a dean in the school. Although the responsibilities of being a dean are quite different from what she’s used to with her choir adviser job, she is definitely thrilled in her new job.

“It’s [being a dean] really different than the choir gig, but in a good way. It’s going well – keeps me hopping!” says Franklin. “I’m excited to get the extra exercise- it lets me eat more!”

She says she loves the challenge that her new job provides her, and it was actually one of her goals to become a dean.

“I’ve been interested in being a dean for a few years now,” says Franklin. “I finished an administrative degree a little over a year ago, and I was ready for the new challenge.”

With a responsibility like this, expectations always come in place. Franklin says that her expectations for her new job are discipline. She says that keeping the halls/school/events safe, cafeteria duty, before school/after school supervision, and helping individual students with every day needs, are only a few of the duties and tasks she has to accomplish. One of her goals as a dean was also to go through a day without any referrals.

Even though it sounds like a lot of responsibilities in hand, Franklin fully enjoys her new career in UHS.

“Helping all students be successful in high school and life after high school is a huge job!” Franklin says. “But I really enjoy interacting with students one on one.”
