New York Shooting Causes Controversy

One innocent person died Aug. 24 at the hands of a gunman outside of the historic Empire State Building in New York. Before this moment, it was just a normal day.

Authorities say Jeffery Johnson fatally shot his co-worker, Steven Ercolino, 41, outside of the company’s office. He was then confronted by police, who killed him. This is one of the many shootings that have happened this year in the U.S.

There were a total of 11 victims, including the gunman and Ercolino.

The other nine were bystanders, hit by police officers’ bullet fragments as they tried to stop Johnson. The fact that the police caused a number of civilian injuries remains the most controversial part about the situation.

Librarian Mr. Murray said, “The police were trying to do their job, and I don’t blame them.”

Johnson’s family told the authorities that he might have done this due to several personal issues. His cat died, he had recently been laid off, and at the age of 7 Johnson was hit by a car and suffered head trauma.

We will never know. Junior Jiahong Chen said, “The whole situation is pretty messed up.”

The government should monitor the distribution of guns. This is very sad and the police should be better trained in order to avoid problems like this. Hopefully, the New York Police take this into account and do not let it happen again.
