Within a month of school, the most exciting week of the year arrived, it was spirit week!
From Sept. 17 to Sept. 21, students could express themselves through costumes, and different styles of outfits. Every day was a new theme: Hero vs. Villain, TV-Show, Throwback, Class Color, and School Colors.

It’s a high energy week that students look forward to each year. Sophomore Tamera Allen said, “I look forward to spirit week because it is fun and I like to dress up as different characters throughout the week. I believe that high school is your chance to express yourself, and spirit week allows us to do that freely.”

“I look forward to spirit week because I get to wear hats, and express myself and I can’t feel awkward about it,” said Sophomore Yaminah Muhammad.

“Throwback” was a favorite this year. It’s different from all the other themes. A lot of students participated for Throwback because they feel that it’s more interesting than the other themes.

“Throwback Wednesday is going to be the most exciting because it’s actually fun,” said Muhammad, before Spirit Week started.

In anticipation, Freshman Kevin Mboyo said, “Throwback will be the best one because it’s not as boring and uninteresting as the other days.”

Students felt that Hero vs. Villain was not the best because of the amount of people that participated and the fact that they didn’t have a costume to wear.
“I didn’t want to dress for Hero vs. Villain because it’s boring and people didn’t participate,” said Allen.

There was also Class Color Day, which was hectic. Every grade was proud to wear their class color, but not all were pleased with the class shirts.

“I think our class shirts aren’t very creative and they are kind of boyish,” said Freshman Heidi Pierce.

Junior Dyna Mulunda said, “I love our class shirts, it send a good message to all the juniors out there and is creative, pretty and very thoughtful.”

Finally, Friday was Tiger Pride Day. Some students looked forward to Friday because of the parade and pep rally. Prior to Spirit Week, Mboyo said, “I can’t wait to see what the pep rally is like and I also can’t wait to see others and I go crazy with orange and black.”

“I’m most excited about Friday when we get to wear orange and black because, everyone goes crazy and represents Urbana proudly,” said Pierce.

Although Spirit Week is only once a year, it’s a time students really enjoy and express themselves in different ways.
