Mone Davis Impresses in the Little League World Series

In the past few years, there have been many advances in women competing in sports alongside men, such as, this past summer when a 13 year old Mone Davis pitched in the Little League World Series (LLWS). Davis became the first female pitcher to record a win. In doing so, she proved that there are many girls in this country who are capable of competing with boys but may not have the same opportunities.

Even though Davis was able to compete with males of her age and succeed, it is a pretty rare occurrence. Even if a girl were to have the ability to play on a boys varsity team, she may not want to play because of fear of being the odd one out.

Senior baseball player, Nauman Khan said, “Having a person with a different personality, likes, and dislikes as the rest of the team, it may be hard for a girl to have a full team experience.”

Having a disconnect from teammates would defeat the purpose of joining the team and having fun. However there are still many girls who would jump at the opportunity to join a boys varsity team, even if it meant being the only girl on the team

Krista Broom, a senior softball player, said, “It would be a little uncomfortable at first but I would get used to it, I’m definitely not the kind of girly girl”.

Davis who finished the LLWS with a complete game shutout with 8 strikeouts under her belt has become an inspiration to many young girls who want to join their local Little League baseball teams. An increase in girls becoming involved in sports at an early age may eventually lead to more girls being able to compete in more boys varsity sports. With more inspirational figures like Davis, the gap between male and female athletics may begin to close.
