UHS Student Section Making an Impact This Football Season #ProudofU

Every Friday night, high school students across the country file into their local high school stadiums to cheer on their football team to victory. After a disappointing year of student attendance in the 2013 season, Urbana’s home opener against Morton on september 5th proved to be a different story.

Before the home opener an account for the student section was created on Twitter, which rallied some much needed support. The account was able to spread the news of what time the game was and what to wear quickly and despite the bad weather the fans stilled showed up. After an almost two hour rain delay and more rain throughout the game, over 60 students braved the storm as the whiteout, where students were told to all wear white to the game, went on. Despite losing a close game, which had a score of 21-20, this was still the start of the newly found student section.

“It meant a lot to me to have that many fans stay for the game” said Senior football player Jeff Trask, “having a good student section really helps the team get fired up and helps us to play harder.”

The student section also made a reappearance the next week against crosstown rival Central High School.

On September 12 WCIA televised a pep rally, that included clips of students, band members, and cheerleaders to put on the morning news, the student section showed out again in full force for the game later that night. Despite the loss 44-26 the students were always relentless with their cheering.

“Even though we lost the game it was still a great time being able to come out and cheer on our team and do the most we could to help the team win,” said Senior Nick Romito, who attended both home games for the Tigers.

Going to the football games and joining the student section is a great way to meet new friends, hang out with current friends, cheer on your school, and just have an amazing time! So if anyone has nothing to do on a Friday night, just come out to the field and cheer on your school!
