Urbana High School students and staff are currently celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month.

Hispanic Heritage Month is “a month dedicated to the independence of five countries: Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador)” explains Clinae (CiCi) Campbell, sponsor of Latin American Club.

Hispanic Heritage Month was originally a week-long event but on August 17th, 1988 President Ronald Reagan officially made it a month long event running from September 15th until October 15th.

According to Campbell UHS Celebrates this Month because “…We want to highlight the opportunity for students to celebrate culture while welcome students to express themselves and let people learn about their roots.”

The Latino American Club started celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a kickoff in the Commons and continues by playing music on Mondays and putting different cultural quotes in the morning announcements.

“This Thursday there will be a Zumba Family Night, which everyone is welcome to come,” states Campbell.

If you are interested, celebrate the festivities with the Latino American Club Thursday, October 11 at Zumba Night from 4-5 p.m. in the Commons.
