Urbana Makes Changes From Past Incidents

With the recent increase in altercations at Urbana High School, the current role of the Student Interventionists has changed drastically. At the beginning of the school year, each of the four SI’s were assigned to a different grade, but as discipline issues were heavily concentrated in the freshman class, it was decided to move DeAndre Henderson from 11th grade to focus his attention on 9th grade, along with Lorence Reid.

While this may seem like a risky idea, as Ashley Cho will now be left responsible for both 11th and 12th grade—a total of around 600 students—many SI’s believe focusing more attention on 9th graders will result in a significant change in the amount of discipline issues at that level. As

DeAndre Henderson notes, “The biggest change will be spreading the workload evenly and be able to address the minor things.”

Overall, as Jorge Elvir, head of discipline at Urbana High School, says “We saw a trend in our data that 9th grade had the most trouble.” Administration hopes that these changes will lead to improved results in the future.
