5 Democratic Presidential Candidates of 2020

The 2020 Presidential Election is quickly approaching with much intrigue as the United States upcoming election has been highly publicized.  It is clear that current President Donald Trump will most likely represent the Republican Party in the next presidential primary. However, the Democratic side is wide open with an ever-growing list of candidates who have announced their intent to run.  Read below for a summary of the 5 most highly covered candidates with a description of their policies and beliefs.

Kamala Harris:  Harris is currently a Senator from California, the first of Indian or Jamaican descent to earn that position.  Harris identifies her main values as freedom, justice, and equality and particularly standing up against all forms of injustice in American society.  She has advocated for legalizing marijuana and has developed the “Lift Act,” a plan to lift people out of poverty by providing the middle class with a $6,000 tax credit.  Some of her other stances on key political issues include opposing a border wall and supporting Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a move to universal health care, free college tuition to public schools for students with an income less than $125,000, and the ban of assault weapons to control gun violence.

Cory Booker:  Booker is currently a Senator from New Jersey, the first African-American U.S. Senator from that state.  He believes in requiring background checks for people attempting to purchase guns and banning all assault weapons.  Booker also supports $15 minimum wage and would like to promise guaranteed jobs in the future. When it comes to immigration, Booker supports DACA and opposes policies created by the Trump Administration.  Finally, Booker advocates for LGBTQ and abortion rights and supports the right of transgender people to serve in the military.

Elizabeth Warren:  Warren is currently serving as a Senator representing Massachusetts and was a special assistant for President Barack Obama.  Warren has set the goal of ending corruption in Washington and giving the power back to the American people. She wants to focus on rebuilding the middle class if she were to win presidency, including lowering the cost of rent by 10% across America and creating 1.5 million new jobs.

 

Kirsten Gillibrand:  Gillibrand is currently a Senator from New York, who announced on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert that she was running for the 2020 presidency.  Gillibrand believes that all Americans should have access to clean water and air and wants to change the narrative surrounding the environment. She also values the importance of immigrants in the United States, making it clear that she wants them to be treated fairly and have the opportunity to attain citizenship.  Gillibrand is a supporter of the Second Amendment, but wants to eliminate illegal guns and prevent dangerous criminals from acquiring these guns.

Bernie Sanders:  Sanders recently announced that he will make another run for the presidency after running in 2016.  He lost to Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic Primary, but will look to rebound in the 2020 Election.  One of Sanders most famous stances is his idea to make tuition free for all public colleges and universities.  He also wants to cut carbon emissions by 40% by 2030 and eventually tax carbon emissions. Sanders stance on gun reform is he wants to ban all assault weapons and repeal laws protecting gun manufacturers.  Finally, he wants to break up big banks in the economy and open up the Federal Reserve.
