Welcome to Captains’ Talk, a column all about getting to know UHS team captains. This week, we spoke to Miguel Lemus and Ivan Mineyev, varsity soccer captains.

WHO: Miguel Lemus is a senior at UHS and has a lot to look forward to as his final year as a student and player.

WHY: Lemus is a three time varsity player and is currently in his fourth and final year. He is a role model for how good a UHS soccer player should be due to his amazing soccer IQ/ Awareness that come in handy during a game.

Lemus plays soccer not only for fun, but because “I always try to improve myself physically and mentally.”

Many high school soccer players want to go pro or at least keep playing in college and Lemus is no different.  “I will keep working hard and hopefully make it to college and keep playing soccer there,” he said.

Lemus hopes to use his values to achieve his goals for his final season as a UHS soccer player. “Hopefully we win Regionals, Sectionals and maybe even Super Sectionals,” he said.

WHO: Ivan Mineyev is a senior at UHS who was chosen to represent the soccer team on the “Tiger Pride Poster” that gathers all of the captains from their respective club sports either because they are the best or because they represent the best of the teams values.

WHY: Ivan Mineyev was chosen to represent the soccer due to his hard work and natural role to lead people on and off the pitch.

Mineyev is the poster boy for the UHS boys soccer team. “It’s an honor for me to lead such a great team,” he said. “Being a captain means having responsibilities like setting a good example for the team on how to act and play.” For Mineyev, “Hard work, dedication, determination, and discipline are very important for me.”

When it comes to soccer goals, Ivan keeps it quite literal. His goals for the season are to “have a positive impact on the team” and “hope to score many goals this season.”

Unlike Lemus, Mineyev will dedicate himself to his studies instead of soccer. “After the season ends, I’ll probably stop playing soccer because I want to focus more on whatever major I decide to study,” he said.
