English teacher Art Banister is in their first year of teaching, but has already made an impression on their students. Read on for a little insight of who Mx. Banister is, in their own words!

What made you want to start teaching?

Funnily enough, it was not a lightbulb moment. I transferred from ICC to ISU without much of an idea. I was more confident in what I did not want to do [like computer science]. I figured I was decent at writing so I did an English major, and my supervisor said it would be best to find a focus. That’s how I got into the English education program. I was influenced by previous teachers and professors, however.

What’s your favorite hobby?

Nerd stuff, but reading. I am reading 5+ books right now.

If you only had one day to live, what would you do in that 24 hours?

Visit friends in other states. I have a strong group of online friends who I haven’t met yet.

If you could travel to a place and never return, where would you go?

The middle of nowhere Alaska!

What’s your favorite food?

Pad Thai or vegan pizza.

A thing you recommended everybody try?

I recommend meditation. It really helps me begin and end the day!

Something you would change about the world?

Negative views

Would you rather travel to the past or future and why?

Past! I love history and I would appreciate discussing with those with different social contexts.

Current favorite song?

I am not someone who listens to music much. I would say anything by Louis Armstrong.

What’s something you wished somebody told you before you turned 18?

To focus more on the play, not that work isn’t important, but it is extremely easy to burn out if you don’t reward yourself.
